Job Interview Tips: How to Make the Best First Impression

By: Daisy O’Connor

If you are applying for a job, most employers will require you to take an interview after the initial application. This is your opportunity to make a good impression and to show employers that you are someone they would enjoy working with and would integrate well with the company. If you are applying for your first job, interviews are especially important because your resume may not be as strong as other candidates. Here are some tips that will help you secure that job and climb that corporate ladder!

Do your research

DO NOT enter the interview room blind. Research on the company’s policies, competitors, and the job itself. Know what their expectations are for the position as well as the skills required, so you can prepare to demonstrate those skills to the recruiters during your interview.

Line up your answers and questions for the interviewer

Though you should not sound scripted, be prepared for the common questions for applicants your age and employment status. This will help you avoid fumbling and sounding unsure or sounding like you are trying to make excuses. Anticipate what makes them hesitant in hiring you, so you can confront those issues without being too defensive. Line up some questions for the interviewer or committee beforehand to demonstrate your dedication and organization.

Practice!

Before the interview, run over possible answers - making sure that you are speaking confidently and clearly. You will become more articulate and convincing as you practice. One good way to practice is by having a friend or a family member ask you potential questions. Make sure to ask them questions as well, so you know what it is like to ask certain questions during an interview.

Start off enthusiastically

Most interviewers make up their minds in the first 5 minutes, so if you enter the room enthusiastically and with positive energy, thanking them for their time, the interview will be off to a great start!

Finish on a positive note

People remember the first and last time they meet or see you, so try and make sure that you land on a solid finish, thanking them for their time and expressing your interest in the job. Tell them that you are really looking forward to the interview and reiterate how you are perfect for the job, thoughtful, and mature.

Don’t worry!

Interviews are difficult and can be stressful, but there is no need to worry if you were not selected or the interview went badly. Interview skills take practice and experience. There is always next time! If you do get the job - congratulations! Remember: all you need to do during the interview is to make yourself comfortable while staying honest and thoughtful. Good luck!
